  • Short Circuit and Protective Device Coordination Studies

POWER QUALITY

SE’s power quality services / products include: Monitoring and evaluation to establish baseline conditions at the substation and feeder levels Troubleshooting, identification and analysis of specific problems on distribution and consumer-side locations; Solutions for all types of power quality problems including wiring and grounding problems, harmonics, stray / transient voltage, voltage deviations, and momentary power outages; Comprehensive studies that provide Clients with a full report of power quality situations and recommendations designed to provide specific steps and processes for addressing power quality issues.

SE’s engineers understand the industry standards and regulatory rules that establish guidelines for power quality.  By developing performance-based targets and benchmarks, SE helps Clients prioritize projects, measure improvements and systematically improve power quality on the utility distribution system.  Our experience in all types of engineering design projects, utility planning, and operational support gives us the ability to understand and evaluate the complex interactions and compatibility of sensitive electrical equipment and its electrical environment.  Our tools include the latest monitoring and evaluation instruments and software.  Our power quality services our provide recommendations for corrective action for all types of power quality situation.

SECTIONALIZING AND FUSING STUDIES

Sectionalizing: Proper sectionalizing of a distribution system can have a considerable effect on continuity of service and overall system reliability.  Strategic placement and coordination of protective devices (breakers, fuses, sectionalizers, etc.) can limit fault-induced service interruptions to the fewest possible customers and the shortest possible time.  Proper sectionalizing will protect the distribution circuit and associated equipment by providing desired responses to different types of faults.

ARC-FLASH ASSESSMENTS

An arc-flash assessment is performed to determine the level of threat the electric system presents to utility workers, property and the general public in the event of an unplanned arc-flash (or, flash-over) of a system component or components.  The assessment identifies risk level s using a system of metrics which differentiates high, low and average risk locations across the service area.  Arc-flash assessment and mitigation planning are now mandated by all major national safety codes, including NEC, NESC and OSHA, as well as State and local codes and standards. Since an accurate model of the electric system (including properly-modeled sectionalizing and fault-clearing devices) is important for a successful arc-flash study, the arc-flash study is a natural extension to a sectionalizing study and can be merged into one efficient and cost-effective study activity.

OWNER’S ENGINEER

As Owner’s Engineer, we partner with our Client’s to develop specific project requirements, manage the specification and selection of the EPC, provide business consultation and represent our Clients in the review of engineering design to ensure adherence to Owner’s requirements, monitoring of manufacturer’s vendor drawings, and support during construction and commissioning. We serve as an advocate to your business objectives and operate as an extension to the organization. Our experience as an EPC and Owner’s Engineer provides our Client’s with a unique resource to manage simple to complex projects.
